Inside Aside

These are short pieces on the kind of things that come up in my work. Not advice exactly, and not therapy by another name. More like the thinking behind the thinking, explained in plain language for anyone who finds that useful. They're here if you want them.

Can’t switch off?

Some thoughts on overthinking and the exhausting business of trying to think your way to certainty.

There’s nothing specific you can point to. Just a persistent feeling that something is about to go wrong, and the quietly maddening discovery that knowing you’re overthinking it makes absolutely no difference whatsoever.

There are times when the things you thought you could rely on change.

You know perfectly well that the thing you’re afraid of isn’t actually dangerous.

You may not think of yourself as someone who avoids things. You’ve just found ways around them.

There are some things you only have to do once before you think, Right. I’m not doing that again

And then, sooner or later, there you are.

Doing it again.
